Forest School Assistant

Application deadline: May 1st, 2022

Muddy Boots is seeking a part-time Forest School Assistant to help lead our Forest School beginning in August at Walnut Woods State Park.  This is a great role for someone looking for consistent part-time hours, who has a passion for being outdoors and helping children engage with and learn about nature, with the flexibility to bring their own child(ren) with them.

Assistant will be working directly with Kate.

Job Description

The Forest School Assistant plays an important role in our nature-immersive program. At Muddy Boots we value the rich experiences that come from being outdoors— hiking, climbing, jumping in puddles, turning over logs and gazing up at the trees. The natural world teaches us about ourselves and what we are capable of doing. Giving children time to explore in the forest is one of the best ways to nurture this awareness.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support a group of up to 12 students aged 2.9-6 by interacting with children in a supportive, respectful, and open-minded manner, using positive language and discipline, and making sure students are safe and supported all in a forest environment.

  • Support outdoor/environmental activities such as hiking, building shelters, and other similar activities.

  • Spend considerable time with children outdoors, in all weather conditions (up to 3.5 hours).

  • Must be 18 years of age.

  • Experience with hiking and outdoor activities.

  • Interest in education, specifically outdoor/environmental education or working with young children.

  • Ability to spend a considerable time on your feet and lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Consistent availability on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00am-12:30pm, with holiday breaks built in to the forest school schedule.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly; $18/hr; paid bi-weekly

  • Paid training

  • Enrollment opportunity for own children of forest school age to attend.

  • $100 annual allowance for upgrading clothing/gear for working outdoors.
